Evergreen trees to 1 m in diameter, often with plank buttressed roots; bark grayish.
Leaves oblong to oblanceolate, 8–13 cm long, 3–4.3 cm broad, acuminate at apex, cuneate or acute at base, entire or rarely serrate near apex, lateral veins 8–9 pairs, midrib flat above, prominent below; petioles 2–3 cm long.
Staminate flowers with perianth 6-lobed; stamens 12, 2 mm long, 1.5 mm broad. Pistillate flowers usually 3 in a cluster; perianth 6-lobed; ovary 3-celled, each cell with 2 ovules, styles 3, pointed, hairy at base.
Cupules dish-like, 0.9 cm across, with imbricate, tomentose scales;nuts ovoid, 1.8 cm long, 1.2 cm across.

Pistillate flowers blooming from March to May; fruits maturing from October to November.

台灣 : in the central and southwestern parts (Lienhuachih and Meiyuen, north of Puli; Takeng, near Taichung; and Liukuei, near Chishan), eastern part (Chingshui, near Yuli), and on the Hengchun Peninsula. Altitudes between 500 and 1,600 m.
世界 : Distributed in Japan, the Ryukyus and mainland China (S & E).
